Patriots of Prejudice

I am embarrassed by the way some of our citizens are conducting themselves when it comes to our immigration crisis in America.  Our founders had many hopes and dreams in mind as they hammered out the design for our new country, but I think they would be embarrassed also by the lack of compassion being shown to our neighbors in need.  What happened to the moral, empathetic people who proudly embraced the ideals carved in the The New Colossus” standing so proudly in New York harbor where the poem by Emma Lazarus proclaims:

“Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she
With silent lips. “Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

We all agree that our Immigration system is broken and our borders are not impregnable, but this should not lead us to take up our current shame.  Instead, these undeniable facts should lead us to new legislation that repairs the neglect imposed by Partisanship and greed.  We should remember what it means to be an American.
