Yesterday I republished my blog post from November 10th, 2016 where I expressed my thoughts about how we had shouted to the world that we are a Nation of prejudice, and misbehaviors that had previously been thought to exist only in the shadows of our society. For those who might want to read that post, it is still reachable via https://hankthomasblog.com/2016/11/10/say-what/ . As I write this, it is in the 5 o’clock hour of November 4th, 2020. The votes have not all been counted so our republican-democracy hasn’t yet completed its work of determining who will be our next President.
President Trump has declared victory and has apparently turned loose his legal staff to stop the counting and make his proclamation official. Former Vice President Biden is asking for calm and patience while the remaining votes are counted. However this works out there are some things we can have confidence in as the next few days unfold. We are a Nation divided and there appears to be no prospect for that to change any time soon. Nearly half of us harbor deep seated prejudice of all kinds and we approve of prejudicial behaviors even if we do not harbor them ourselves. Lies from our President that destroy our trust in a variety of institutions are not grounds for his disqualification.
Here we are counting the ballots again in another of our most contentious elections in our history. We seem to have confirmed to the world that our shining beacon is all but extinguished. We will wait for the official outcome, but we know that our future will surely be more difficult than some of our number hoped.
