Look around you and what do you see? Republicans everywhere are seemingly agreeing with President Trump that he won the election with a landslide and it can still be overturned by the Judicial Branch if they would just gather up a little courage. Of course, this is all fiction and has no chance of happening without some serious misconduct on the part of several levels of our Judiciary and that misconduct would certainly be an impeachable offense were it to occur. So why are President Trump and his Republican sycophants singing this siren’s song of apparent destruction of our republican democracy? Let’s put our cognitive skills to work.
We haven’t heard it regarding the various Senators and Representatives, but we have heard it with respect to President Trump and that is the fact that he is raking in huge amounts of campaign donations since the November 3rd election. According to the news reports, a percentage of those donations are finding their way into the RNC coffers and we can probably be confident that the same relationship probably exists with those sycophants as well. These accounts are all known as 527s or Political Action Committees (PACs). As I understand the rules, donations to PACs are not required to be disclosed publically so if I am right, Republicans are pouring money into their coffers and there will be no way for the public to find out how much was poured in or what it was used for. This sort of campaign finance should not be legal and we all know it.
Let’s put our imagination to work on some possible uses for these funds. Probably one of the highest priorities would be to support voter suppression efforts across America. And, lest we forget, this year is a zero year and that means a census year. The census will be the source of controversy as it has been for much of the last year and some of that controversy will come in the form of gerrymandering efforts wherever the Republicans see the potential of strengthening their grip on political power. Another way to spend the money will be the creation and refining of social media attacks against the Biden Administration and other progressive initiatives throughout the country. The Republican party is a minority party and will be into the future, but that does not mean that the Republican party cannot win an election. No, the Republicans will still be able to win an election using the dishonest tactics of voter suppression, gerrymandering, and nefarious uses of social media.
