Yesterday, January 6th, 2021, Our President showed us just how far he would go to overthrow our Federal Government and remain in power. Yesterday was the culmination of his lies that all led us to the events we witnessed. He stoked the flames of radical insurrection in his legions of supporters and invited them to come to Washington, D.C. for a day of excitement. His lies were like tools in a toolbox and he used them to craft others into his own image with all restraints of civility they may have once had discarded.
President Trump was actively supported by the likes of Senator Ted Cruz, Senator Josh Hawley, Senator Lindsey Graham and many more elected Senators and Representatives. Some of his supporters were more active than others, but all were seeking personal benefit at the expense of our republican-democracy. President Trump and his supporters sought out and groomed friendships with White Supremacist, White Nationalist and other radical groups of un-Americans whose friendships they could cultivate.
Please allow me to offer a couple of quotes from my Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, 11th Edition for consideration:
Treason: 1. The betrayal of a trust: TREACHERY 2. The offense of attempting by overt acts to overthrow the government of the state to which the offender owes allegiance or to kill or personally injure the sovereign or the sovereign’s family.
Insurrection: An act or instance of revolting against civil authority or an established government
Sedition: Incitement of resistance to or insurrection against lawful authority
To my way of thinking, sedition is a subset of insurrection and insurrection is a subset of treason. Further, as I understand these definitions, our President’s behavior and that of his elected supporters clearly falls within the bounds of treason in no small part because they all took an oath to “support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic, that they would bear true faith and allegiance to the same.” I believe they saw themselves in a wartime posture and justified their efforts accordingly. And, in that posture I am under the impression that their behavior could lead, if convicted, to a punishment of death. Yes, this is a harsh penalty and it should be harsh. We are talking about TREASON and we supposedly live in a “law and order” society.
