Over the Line Speech

Back around the time that President Trump was only a couple of days into his term as our 45th President, there was lots of conversation about political correctness and how tired some people were of the whole thing.  I pointed out then that the whole “political correctness” effort was an effort to avoid offending others and anyone who was tired of “political correctness” was really saying that they intended to offend others with their comments.  They are saying they intend to use inflammatory language when they engage in conversation.  They may use profanity when it should be avoided or resort to name calling or other tactics that will cause discomfort in their audience.  This all sounds like behavior to be avoided rather than something to be embraced.

With these ideas in mind, let’s consider what Mr. Joe diGenova had to say a few days back with regards to Mr. Chris Krebs, the recently fired head of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency (CISA).  For those who may not know, Mr. diGenova is one of President Trumps campaign lawyers.  Clearly, Mr. diGenova should know when certain remarks are acceptable and when they are not.  Mr. diGenova said that Mr. Krebs should be “taken out at dawn and shot.”

I’ll contend that these remarks were greeted by the media as more inflammatory than Mr. diGenova originally intended.  That said, I think they were way over the line and far into the world of political incorrectness.  Mr. diGenova, in my view, intended for his remarks to be sensationalistic and quotable.  He knew what he was doing and he did it with malice forethought.  With his words, Mr. diGenova ventured over the line into the realm of provocative speech where others could easily believe that he was calling upon them to turn his words into actions.

I am of the opinion that Mr. diGenova should be called to answer for his conduct just as he clearly believes that others should be called to answer for theirs.
