Now we are hearing about off duty police officers participating in the assault on our Capitol and even one State elected official that just couldn’t stay away. What I am finding interesting, however, is the idea that a white supremacist Police Officer just might be inclined to abuse his or her police powers when dealing with non-white members of society. After all, if a white supremacist police officer will assault our Capitol, we should not be surprised when he shoots a non-white, unarmed person while he is running away. And, I also wonder if an abusive police officer just might be dealt with more leniently by a chain of command that has members with white supremacist leanings. I’m just thinking out loud here, but I am having a hard time convincing myself that these possibilities are not reasonable.
Sure we have freedom of speech, but we also have the responsibility for our actions regardless of who we are or why we did something. We hear that police officers have “qualified immunity” and that protection makes it much more difficult to convict a police officer of wrong-doing. I understand why “qualified immunity” is necessary, but we continue to witness events where a white police officer has taken the life of an unarmed non-white person and regardless of the circumstances the officer appears to have been acting in bad faith. We find ourselves wondering how these officers cannot be convicted and why did they feel threatened in the first place. Now we learn that we have white supremacist police officers and we must wonder if their white supremacist beliefs were a factor in their decision to pull the trigger. This possibility surely offers a plausible explanation for some of the police behaviors we have witnessed. Maybe, that “qualified immunity” should have a few more qualifications?
Going back to the Capitol on January 6th, we can understand some of the police complacency if we consider that some of the police officers were acting out of some white supremacist beliefs. Isn’t it possible that a Capitol Police Officer might have felt a sort of kinship with the white supremacist terrorists?
Five people died as a result of the assault. One of them was a Capitol Police Officer who apparently died as a direct result of being attacked by one or more of the terrorists so every participant is an accomplice to murder. Every participant is an accomplice to every crime committed by the MAGA Mob during their assault on the Capitol. The protestors turned terrorist MAGA Mob people are potentially facing a lot of their future experiencing our prison system.
