We are hearing a lot from the talking heads about the various State Legislatures working to pass new laws that would have the effect of voter suppression targeting citizens of color and lower incomes in our society. I hear the number of such legislative bills estimated at 360 over some 47 States. 360 bills over 47 States – can you believe it? Are there that many racists in State Legislatures across America? How many of them are white supremacists? If we just consider the numbers, we can safely say that white supremacy and racism have their tentacles reaching far deeper into our society than we might have thought.
I find myself remembering the many texts about our Civil War. To make my point here I will refer to that tragic conflict by its other name, The War Between the States. Remember how we referred to the two sides of the conflict as The North and The South? Remember how there seemed to be many more States on The North side than there were on The South side? Without worrying about any specific numbers, let’s turn our thoughts to 47 out of fifty States working to suppress the votes of their citizens of color and other low income or minority groups. Has this plague of prejudice spread or is something else going on? We all have a lot of work to do before this matter can be cleared up. Hearts and minds all over our United States of America must be searched and the things we find there must be brought out into the open and shared with others so that our current ignorance can be transformed into wisdom and become the foundation for an even “more perfect union” than our Founding Fathers worked to design.
