When it comes to the affairs of our Federal Government, what is right for America is often not what is right for any particular person.
I was just listening to CNN as Anderson Cooper was interviewing a Senator with an ideological stance on guns and the Second Amendment. He offered the argument that our current background check system is not working because we are only prosecuting a very small portion of those persons who are caught wrongfully trying to get a gun when they are not allowed to own a gun in the first place. His point was simply that we need to prosecute more of the cases we already have before we try to catch more perpetrators to prosecute. A specious argument coming from a person whose ideological grouping has stood squarely in the way of funding the enforcers so they could prosecute more of the perpetrators already identified. Let me be clear – these same ideologues have rendered our laws unenforceable for lack of resources and then stand up to say we shouldn’t try to make our current laws even more effective because we aren’t able to enforce the laws we have. I know I am in absolute awe of both his logic and his ability to deliver it with a straight face.
At the end of the interview, the Senator tried to make the point that he is in favor of keeping guns away from the “bad guys.” To this I say hogwash! When it comes to the current debate, those who aren’t arguing to help the “good guys” are arguing to help the “bad guys.” Going just one step further, filibustering in an attempt to stop the legislation is an argument to help the “bad guys.”
