During my morning conversation with the treadmill, I was just introduced to the racist event hosted by a group of Sigma Alpha Epsilon members at The University of Oklahoma and I can’t find a suitable adjective for what I am feeling. Shock is not strong enough and neither is disgust, but I’ll keep looking for something to convey my emotions.
On a weekend filled with the celebrations in and in support of Selma, AL as we commemorate the events there just 50 short years ago, this video of such vile content bubbles up to the surface. On a weekend where so many Americans were examining themselves and their thoughts about our National progress towards equality, this video of such vile content bubbles up to the surface. We shouldn’t be surprised that there are people who have such thoughts and we shouldn’t be surprised that such people even discuss such vile prejudices amongst themselves, but we should be shocked that we have been subjected to this vile content from the depths of our social order.
We have made progress towards equality since that bloody Sunday in Selma, but not enough – we are not finished with our work and if these young bigots teach us nothing else, they teach us how far we still have to go. It is not enough to sit silently when we know some of those around us hold such despicable thoughts. No, we must politely and respectfully show the world around us that we do not hold such thoughts. We must lead by example and, in so doing, shun those thoughts and the people who would nurture them.
