It is time to call ‘em like I see ‘em following this latest school shooting in Florida.
To the NRA as an organization, its Officers and its Members; YOU HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS. You may not have been the one who lobbied Congress to do nothing following the prior shootings in our American schools, but you supported your organization in its efforts to prevent Congress from taking action. And just so we’re clear, I don’t want your guns and I don’t want to attack the 2nd Amendment.
To the Representatives and Senators in the 115th Congress who were sitting quietly in your chairs prior to the Florida school shooting yesterday, YOU HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS. You were not capable of changing our laws by yourself, but you chose to sit quietly in your chair and do nothing so you bear some of the responsibility for this unnecessary tragedy.
To the President of the United States, YOU HAVE BLOOD ON YOUR HANDS. You do not have the authority to change our laws, but you have an important LEADERSHIP role in our National Government when it comes to enforcement of our laws and you sat quietly in your chair and did nothing.
We are a “nation of laws” and as a “nation of laws” we look to our Government when our laws prove to be inadequate. It is the responsibility of our Government to make or change our laws to meet the needs of the majority of our citizens and, just so we are clear, the NRA as an organization, does not represent a majority of our citizens.
Our children are the most prized treasure of our Nation and for us to allow these senseless shootings to take place is – well I can’t find an adjective that seems a strong enough descriptor. Our children deserve so much more than we are giving them on this issue, but we cannot seem to overcome our lack of knowing what to do. In other words, I think it is our not knowing what to do that allows our Representatives, Senators, and our President to do nothing more than “pray and observe an moment of silence.” ENOUGH! We have been silent for too long.
I have an idea. Today, tomorrow and every day from now on, tell everyone you meet that you want our Government to change our laws in some way as an attempt to stop these senseless shootings. Put it on your Facebook page. Text it to all your friends, Instagram it and Tweet it and shout it from the rooftops that our Government must change our laws in response to these senseless shootings. As citizens it is our job to tell our Representatives, Senators and our President, what we want them to do – they “represent” us. It is their job to debate and adopt change on our behalf so it is time for them to DO THEIR JOB.
