We have been subjected to conjecture of a Constitutional Crisis several times during the Trump administration. The term almost comes across as self-explanatory, but if we try to do a deep dive on its meaning we will find ourselves ill-prepared. No doubt the term strikes fear in many American hearts, but those hearts are mostly fearful of the unknown so let’s clear the air just a bit.
According to Wikipedia and several other websites; “In political science, a constitutional crisis is a problem or conflict in the function of a government that the political constitution or other fundamental governing law is perceived to be unable to resolve.” So, a Constitutional Crisis is a governmental problem for which there is no Constitutional response. I’ll say it another way. A Constitutional Crisis is a “check” without a “balance.”
I would be insulting your intelligence if I tried to tell you that our Founding Fathers had President Trump in mind when they were writing the Constitution. I would also be insulting your intelligence if I tried to tell you that the “checks and balances” were working as designed. Even so, I think we can agree that the Courts (Judicial Branch) have corrected a number of Executive Branch oversteps. To be sure, we have learned that many of the things we have come to expect from our Federal Government are better described as tradition than they are as a law or regulation with penalty for non-compliance. So, where does that leave us?
We are coming to the end of President Trump’s first term in office and his administration is operating with impunity on many fronts. Legal or not, traditional or not Trump don’t care. He is a bit like that honey badger that was so popular a few years back. He and his buddies are just doing whatever they think will advance their personal interests and they don’t care what it may be doing to you and me. People are dying – Trump don’t care. People are hungry – Trump don’t care. People are being evicted from their homes – Trump don’t care. All Trump cares about is Trump.
