One Down – One To Go

The Democrat National Convention is now in the books.  It didn’t feel the same virtually as it used to feel when all the folks gathered in a large convention center to party hearty.  As I think about the different look and feel of the convention I believe that some of the changes were better than the old way and I hope that some of the virtual events will be used again in the future even though they might not be absolutely necessary.

For me, the single most important thing I take away from the Democrat Convention is the call to action for the voters, all the voters, to plan for their vote.  All voters should learn what their voting options are and prepare for the uncertainties that may creep into our voting processes of 2020.  The mere existence of Coronavirus will complicate our processes in ways that we do not yet know.  We will all be best served if we take the time to learn about our personal voting procedures and make sure we have a backup plan figured out to make sure our vote will be counted.

Next week it will be the Republican’s turn and we will see what their ideas of a convention during a pandemic should look like.  They will face the same technological limitations that the Democrats did, but they will probably have different ideas of how to deliver their message to the viewing public.  This time next week we will all know what the two sides of the aisle think is important to us and how best to achieve it.

If we have learned nothing else from recent events, we have learned that our republican democracy does not function in autopilot.  Our republican democracy requires each and every one of us to pay attention and take action whenever we find that our government is not performing as we intend.  We the people are supposed to be the recipients of good government and when our government is not good, we the people have the responsibility to fix it.

The Sausage Grinder is Broken, will you help to fix it?  If you haven’t read A Broken Sausage Grinder; Is Our Government Fundamentally Flawed?, you’re not prepared for the job.
