It always seems to come from people who don’t like the way the Trump Administration is doing things. The words we hear will be “this is not who we are.” The person saying these words is trying to distance themselves from the offensive behavior under consideration at the moment and they are also offering some solace to those who may be listening and might want some distance also. But, when we consider how our President is chosen, this is exactly who we are.
Our ancestors were the ones who sat down and designed the way we would choose our President and our Vice President. They put their collective heads together and came up with a means by which each State, large or small, could be represented as equally as possible as we make this important choice. Keep in mind that our Nation is the United States of America and that distinction is important. If we were the United People of America we could choose our President and Vice President according to the popular vote and it would make perfect sense to do so. But, we are the United States of America and our various States are not the same in terms of their size or population so either of those metrics would make our system of choosing less equal rather than more equal.
When it comes to who we are, we must remember that when we are choosing our leadership we are using a majority vote method of determining who will be our new leader. The whole business of democratic government is based on the will of the majority. How we find the majority is the topic of this discussion and unless there is evidence that the vote in 2016 was somehow fraudulent, the majority vote according to our lawful method of determining it was in favor of Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence to be our new President and Vice President. There were those who hated Hillary; there were those who wanted to blow it all up; there were those who loved Donald and there were those who blindly followed their party line. In the end, the voters all voted, or not, according to their personal reasons and that is the most fundamental element of our republican democracy.
So, unless someone has evidence that the 2016 Presidential election was fraudulent, we chose to be here. We chose to be represented by the people we elected and the end result was the crop of elected officials we now have in office. It was our choice and the majority of us chose to elect President Donald J. Trump and Mike Pence to be our President and our Vice President.
We are exactly who we appear to be. The real question for each of us to answer is who we will choose to be our new President and Vice President. Remember, elections have consequences.
