We Should Be Incensed

It is January 6, 2023.  It is two years ago today that a mob of un-Americans laid siege to our Capital in the hopes of retaining Donald J. Trump in the office of the Presidency.  Donald Trump and his many minions had prepared for that day and some of them actively helped to stoke the flames of insurrection as the day unfolded.  Many law enforcement officers were injured.  Lots of property was damaged.  The hoped-for goal of blocking the peaceful transition of power was not achieved and the fifty certified state records of the Electoral College ballots were tallied.  Our republican democracy worked.

Today I am hearing, for the first time, that the Department of Justice investigation is still in its infancy – essentially just getting started.  I am hearing that there could be at least twice as many indictments as we now have before the DOJ investigation will be complete – I am hearing about the potential for three thousand total indictments before the work is done.  If these numbers are credible, we should be shocked, disappointed, and incensed all at the same time.

Attorney General Garland has often attested to the concept that nobody is above the law.  Other officials have made similar comments, but we should be careful about accepting them after two years of sloth-like progress.

In the meantime, Donald Trump and the Republican party are doing daily damage to our republican democracy.  We are watching them dismantle our federal government.  Look at the disfunction in the House of Representatives, within the Republican party, as they battle over who to elect as the Speaker of the House.  Several of the participants were directly involved in the January 6th insurrection and today they are part of the decision-making process of choosing the person who will be the third in line of succession to the Presidency.  Talk about un-American activities!  I don’t know how this ends, but we sure aren’t moving in a good direction and we sure aren’t moving fast enough.
